Create Shopify payment method rules step by step

Follow practical workflows for conditional payment methods, COD visibility, payment labels, option ordering, testing, and activation.

Create your first checkout rule

Complete rule-creation guide

  1. Open Shopify Admin, choose your store, and open NovaPay Checkout Rules from Apps.
  2. Select Rules, then choose Create rule or Create draft rule.
  3. Choose whether you want to hide, reorder, or rename checkout payment methods.
  4. Enter a clear internal rule name and choose Active or Deactivated status.
  5. Select whether all conditions or any condition must match, then add the checkout conditions you need.
  6. Select the affected payment methods and complete the action-specific configuration.
  7. Review the setup summary and resolve every missing requirement shown by the builder.
  8. Save the rule, create matching and non-matching test checkouts, and activate it when the result is correct.

Before you start

  • Use the exact payment method labels shown in Shopify checkout.
  • Start with the smallest set of conditions needed.
  • Keep new rules deactivated while testing.
  • Check your plan’s active-rule allowance.

Choose the right rule action

1. Create a hide rule

  1. Open the rule builder.
  2. Select Hide payment methods.
  3. Choose payment methods to hide.
  4. Add conditions and save the rule.

2. Reorder payment methods

  1. Select Reorder payment methods.
  2. Arrange methods in the preferred sequence.
  3. Add checkout conditions.
  4. Test before activating.

3. Rename a payment label

  1. Select Rename payment methods.
  2. Choose the original payment method.
  3. Enter the replacement label.
  4. Save and confirm the checkout wording.

Testing checklist

Check matching and non-matching carts

  • Create a checkout that satisfies every positive condition.
  • Create another checkout that should not satisfy the rule.
  • Confirm negative conditions behave correctly.
  • Verify separate products do not combine conditions unexpectedly.
  • Activate only after both checkout paths are correct.

Plan-aware publishing

When the active-rule limit is reached, keep the new rule as a draft, deactivate another rule, or change the billing plan.
