Getting started

What is NovaPay Checkout Rules?

NovaPay Checkout Rules is a Shopify app that customizes checkout with conditional rules for payment methods, shipping methods, checkout validation, and discounts.

NovaPay runs inside Shopify Admin as an embedded app and uses Shopify Functions, Shopify's official checkout customization technology. Rules run on Shopify's servers during checkout, so they do not slow down the storefront and do not require theme code changes.

What NovaPay can do

  • Payment methods: hide, rename, or reorder payment methods (for example hide Cash on Delivery above an order amount or for certain cities).
  • Payment methods by shipping: hide or allow only certain payment methods based on the selected shipping method, shipping country, province/state, or postal code.
  • Shipping methods: hide, rename, or reorder delivery options (including sorting by price).
  • Checkout validation: block checkout with a custom error message when requirements are not met (P.O. Boxes, minimum order, blocked countries, address quality, phone/email, and more).
  • Discounts: conditional order, product, and shipping discounts, rejecting discount codes, and combined multi-action discounts.

What NovaPay does not do

  • It does not create, install, or process payment gateways. Payment providers must already be set up under Shopify Settings > Payments.
  • It does not create shipping rates. Rates come from Shopify Settings > Shipping and delivery or your carrier apps; NovaPay only hides, renames, or reorders them.
  • It never sees or stores customer card or payment credentials.
  • Rules only affect checkout. They do not change the cart page, product pages, or the theme.

Installing and opening the app

Install from the Shopify App Store, approve permissions, choose a plan, then open NovaPay from Shopify Admin > Apps.

Install NovaPay

  1. Open the Shopify App Store listing: https://apps.shopify.com/novapay-checkout-rules
  2. Click Install and select the store.
  3. Review and approve the requested permissions (checkout, payment customizations, delivery customizations, discounts, validations, products, orders, shipping, markets, and customers - read access to target rules, write access only to create checkout customizations, discounts, and validations).
  4. NovaPay opens inside Shopify Admin. Go to Settings > Billing to start a plan (a 3-day free trial is included for eligible stores).
  5. Go to Rules > Create rule to build your first rule.

App navigation (left menu in Shopify Admin)

  • Home - dashboard and quick start.
  • Rules - the rule library: view, create, edit, duplicate, activate, deactivate, and delete rules.
  • Support - contact form to reach the NovaPay support team (attach up to 5 screenshots, 5 MB each).
  • Settings - General (store name, primary support email, secondary email, product-update email preference) and Billing (plans and subscription).
  • Bulk Discount Importer - only appears for stores where this feature is enabled.
Note: To open NovaPay later: Shopify Admin > Apps > NovaPay Checkout Rules. If the app asks you to update access (for example to load shipping methods), click Update access and approve the scopes in Shopify, then return to the app.

How rules work (core concepts)

Every rule has a name, conditions, condition logic, an action, and a status. Only Active rules affect checkout.

ConceptMeaning
Rule nameInternal name shown in the Rules list. Use something descriptive such as 'Hide COD above 50,000'.
ConditionsThe checkout facts that must be true for the rule to run (cart amount, country, city, product tags, SKUs, customer tags, shipping method, and more).
All conditionsThe action runs only when every configured condition matches the same checkout.
Any conditionThe action runs when at least one configured condition matches.
ActionWhat the rule does: hide, rename, reorder, block checkout, discount, or reject codes.
ActiveThe rule is published to Shopify checkout and can affect customers. Counts toward the plan's active-rule limit.
Deactivated (draft)The rule is saved but has no checkout effect. Drafts are unlimited on every plan, including Free.
Internal notesOptional notes for your team. Never shown to customers.

Per-rule safety limits

  • Up to 20 payment or shipping methods per rule.
  • Up to 12 active conditions per rule.
  • Up to 50 countries, 30 cities/areas, 30 SKUs, and 20 values for tags, title values, variant titles, and customer tags.

Rules list actions

  • Edit - open the rule builder to change the rule.
  • Duplicate rule - copy the configuration. If no active slot is free, the copy is saved as Deactivated.
  • Set as active / Set as inactive (Activate / Deactivate) - publish or unpublish the rule from checkout.
  • Delete - permanently removes the rule and its Shopify checkout customization. This cannot be undone.
Example
When Order amount is greater than 50,000 AND City / Area is one of Karachi, Lahore
Then Hide Cash on delivery
Status Active

How to hide payment methods (for example hide COD)

Rules > Create rule > Hide payment methods. Select the methods to hide, add conditions, save.

  1. In NovaPay, open Rules and click Create rule.
  2. Under Payment methods, choose Hide payment methods.
  3. Enter a Rule name, for example 'Hide COD on orders above 50k'.
  4. Select the payment methods to hide. Pick from the list or search by name, or type a custom name. The name must match the label customers see at checkout (check Shopify Settings > Payments).
  5. Choose Condition logic: All conditions (every condition must match) or Any condition (at least one must match).
  6. Click Select condition and add the conditions you need (see the Conditions reference). Add at least one condition; use Always if the rule should run on every checkout.
  7. Optional: add Internal notes for your team. Customers never see notes.
  8. Set Status. Choose Deactivated while you test, or Active to publish it to checkout (Active requires a free slot on your plan).
  9. Click Save. Then test one checkout that should match and one that should not.

Built-in payment method names: Cash on delivery, Credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, Stripe, Mercado Pago, Bank deposit, Money order. You can also type any custom payment method name exactly as it appears at checkout.

Popular examples

  • Hide COD above an amount: condition Order amount > Greater than > 50000; method Cash on delivery.
  • Hide COD for certain cities: condition City / Area with each city; method Cash on delivery.
  • Allow COD only in certain countries: condition Buyer country, Country match 'is not one of' your COD countries; method Cash on delivery.
  • Hide COD for pre-order or custom products: condition Product tags > Contains any of > preorder.
  • Hide COD for flagged customers: condition Customer tags > Contains any of > no-cod.
  • Hide COD when a discount is used: condition Discount percentage > Greater than > 0.

How to rename payment methods

Rules > Create rule > Rename payment methods. Enter the current checkout label and the new name.

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Rename payment methods.
  2. Enter a Rule name, for example 'Rename COD to Cash on Delivery above 50k'.
  3. In Current checkout label, select or type the exact payment label shown at checkout.
  4. In Rename to, enter the new customer-facing name, for example 'Pay securely by card' or 'Cash on Delivery (+ fee may apply)'.
Note: Renaming changes only the visible label. The gateway, fees, and processing stay the same. Some wallet buttons (such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay express buttons) are rendered by Shopify and may not be renamable. Avoid two active rules renaming the same method.

How to reorder payment methods

Rules > Create rule > Reorder payment methods. Choose the methods and drag them into the order you want.

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Reorder payment methods.
  2. Enter a Rule name, for example 'Show card payments first'.
  3. Choose the Payment method name match (Exact match is safest; Contains works when a label has variable text).
  4. Add the payment methods and drag them into the desired order. Methods you place first appear higher in checkout.

How to control payment methods by shipping method or address

Rules > Create rule > Payment methods by shipping. Hide or allow only selected payment methods based on delivery context.

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Payment methods by shipping.
  2. Enter a Rule name, for example 'No COD with Express shipping'.
  3. Choose a Condition: Selected shipping method, Shipping country, Province / state, or Postal / ZIP code.
  4. Choose an Operator: Equals, Does not equal, Contains, Does not contain, or Starts with. For shipping method you can pick a Store shipping method from the list.
  5. Choose the Behavior: Hide selected methods, or Allow only selected methods (every other method is hidden).
  6. Select payment methods (search, or add a Custom payment method) and choose Payment method name match: Exact match, Contains, or Does not contain.
  7. Set Status (Deactivated to test, Active to publish) and click Save.

Examples

  • Selected shipping method Contains 'Express' -> Hide selected methods: Cash on delivery.
  • Postal / ZIP code Starts with '75' -> Allow only selected methods: Credit card, PayPal.
  • Shipping country Does not equal 'PK' -> Hide selected methods: Cash on delivery.

How to hide, rename, or reorder shipping methods

Rules > Create rule > Hide / Rename / Reorder shipping methods. Works like payment rules but targets delivery options.

Hide shipping methods

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Hide shipping methods.
  2. If prompted, click Update access and approve the shipping scopes so NovaPay can load your store's shipping methods.
  3. Enter a Rule name, for example 'Hide Express for heavy carts'.
  4. Choose the Target: All shipments except subscriptions, All shipments, or Pick up.
  5. Select the shipping methods to hide from your store list, or type the exact checkout title.
  6. Choose Condition logic: All conditions (every condition must match) or Any condition (at least one must match).
  7. Click Select condition and add the conditions you need (see the Conditions reference). Add at least one condition; use Always if the rule should run on every checkout.
  8. Optional: add Internal notes for your team. Customers never see notes.
  9. Set Status. Choose Deactivated while you test, or Active to publish it to checkout (Active requires a free slot on your plan).
  10. Click Save. Then test one checkout that should match and one that should not.

Rename shipping methods

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Rename shipping methods.
  2. Select the current shipping method title and enter the new name, for example 'Standard (3-5 business days)'.
  3. Add conditions, set Status, and Save.

Reorder shipping methods

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Reorder shipping methods.
  2. Choose Reorder using: Custom shipping method order, Shipping price: high to low, or Shipping price: low to high.
  3. For custom order, add the methods and drag them into order.
  4. Add conditions, set Status, and Save.
Note: Shopify automatically pre-selects the first shipping method. Moving a more expensive method to position 1 can increase the shipping rate customers get by default. Shipping options are calculated per address and cart, so test with an address that actually returns the method.

How to block checkout with validation rules

Rules > Create rule > Validate / Block Checkout. Start from a template or an empty rule, set conditions and the error message.

Validation rules stop a customer from completing checkout and show your error message when the conditions match. Use them for address quality, delivery restrictions, order limits, and more.

  1. Open Rules > Create rule > Validate / Block Checkout.
  2. Pick a template from the validation library (or Empty rule to start blank). The template pre-fills the name, conditions, and message.
  3. Adjust the Rule name and conditions. Each condition has a field, an operator, and a value. Use All (AND) or Any (OR) logic for multiple conditions.
  4. Write the error message customers will see, for example 'We don't ship to P.O. Box addresses.'
  5. Choose where the error appears: Automatically choose affected field, Top of checkout page, or a specific field (address line 1/2, company, city, province, country, billing country, postal code, email, phone, shipping phone, customer name).
  6. Set Status (Deactivated to test, Active to publish) and Save.
  7. Test: try a checkout that should be blocked and one that should pass.

Bulk Discount Importer

Imports many discounts at once from a file. Enabled only for selected stores.

The Bulk Discount Importer appears in the NovaPay menu only for stores where the feature has been enabled. If a merchant needs it, they should contact NovaPay support through the in-app Support page and include their store domain.

Tips for reliable conditions

  • Start with one condition, test it, then add more.
  • All conditions narrows targeting; Any condition broadens it.
  • Customer tags only work for signed-in customers; guests have no tags.
  • Text values (cities, titles) depend on what customers type or what Shopify sends; add spelling variants.
  • Amounts use the checkout currency. Test above and below each threshold.

  • Unlimited draft (deactivated) rules.
  • Unlimited conditions within the per-rule safety limits.

Billing, trials, upgrades, and cancellation

Billing is handled by Shopify. Manage your plan in NovaPay > Settings > Billing.

How to choose or change a plan

  1. Open NovaPay > Settings > Billing.
  2. Pick Monthly or Yearly and click the plan you want (Starter, Advanced, or Premium).
  3. Shopify opens an approval screen. Review the price and click Approve.
  4. You return to NovaPay and the new plan is active immediately.
How am I charged?
NovaPay is billed through Shopify. App charges appear on your regular Shopify invoice in USD. NovaPay never asks for card details.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Eligible stores get a 3-day free trial the first time they subscribe. The trial can be used once per store. If you change plans during the trial, the remaining trial days carry over. After the trial, the plan price is charged by Shopify.
Is there a free plan?
Without a subscription the store is on Free. You can build and save unlimited draft rules, but 0 rules can be active, so nothing affects checkout until you subscribe.
What does 'active rule' mean for limits?
Only Active rules count. Deactivated rules never count. Starter's 2 rules are shared across all categories; Advanced and Premium limits apply separately to each category (payment, shipping, validation, discount).
What happens when I upgrade?
The higher limit applies immediately. Deactivated rules are not reactivated automatically; activate the ones you want from the Rules list.
What happens when I downgrade?
If you have more active rules than the new plan allows, NovaPay keeps the most recently updated active rules up to the limit and automatically deactivates the rest (they are removed from checkout but stay saved as drafts). You will see a message with how many rules were deactivated.
How do I cancel?
Open Settings > Billing and cancel the subscription, or uninstall the app (Shopify cancels app subscriptions on uninstall). After cancelling, the store returns to Free and all active rules are deactivated and removed from checkout.
Can I switch between monthly and yearly?
Yes. Select the other billing cycle on Settings > Billing and approve the new subscription in Shopify. Shopify replaces the previous subscription.
Do you offer refunds?
Charges are processed by Shopify. For refund or billing-error requests, contact NovaPay support from the in-app Support page with your store domain and the charge details; each request is reviewed by the team.
Why can't I activate a rule?
Your plan has no free active slot (or the store is on Free). Deactivate another rule in the same category, or upgrade on Settings > Billing. You can still save the rule as Deactivated.

Troubleshooting

How to test rules safely

Save as Deactivated, review, activate, then run a matching and a non-matching checkout.

  1. Save the rule as Deactivated and review every method and condition.
  2. Activate the rule.
  3. Open your storefront in a private/incognito window and build a cart that should match every required condition.
  4. Go to checkout, enter an address that matches, and confirm the method is hidden, renamed, moved, blocked, or discounted.
  5. Repeat with a cart/address that should NOT match and confirm checkout is unchanged.
  6. Test on mobile if wording or order matters.

Troubleshooting common problems

Most problems come from status, plan limits, method-name matching, condition logic, access scopes, or checkout context.

My rule is saved but nothing changes at checkout
Check that the rule is Active, that the plan allows it (Settings > Billing), and that your test checkout satisfies every required condition (All conditions requires all of them). Refresh checkout after changing the cart or address.
The payment or shipping method is not matched
The method name must match the checkout label exactly. Copy it from checkout or Shopify Settings > Payments / Shipping. Use Contains only when a label includes variable text.
Shipping methods do not load in the builder
Click Update access, approve the Shopify scopes, return to NovaPay, and reload. Also confirm the store has active shipping rates for the market.
The rule saved as Deactivated even though I chose Active
The active-rule limit is reached or the store is on Free. Deactivate another rule in that category or upgrade.
A discount cannot be saved
Use a unique title, check the start time and timezone, and complete all required value and eligibility fields. Activation codes must be one exact code with no wildcards.
Conditions produce an unexpected result
Deactivate the rule, reduce it to one condition, test, then add conditions back one at a time. Check All vs Any logic and the operator (for example 'is one of' vs 'is not one of').
City / Area condition is not matching
Matching uses the text the customer enters. Add spelling variants (for example Karachi, Karāchi, KHI).
Customer tag condition is not matching
The customer must be signed in at checkout, and the tag must exist on their customer record.
Express wallet buttons still show
Accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal express) can appear before the payment step and are controlled by Shopify, so some cannot be hidden or renamed by payment customizations.
Two rules conflict
Avoid overlapping rules that rename the same method differently or hide and reorder the same method. Keep conditions specific.
Rules disappeared after a plan change
Downgrades and cancellations deactivate extra rules. They are still saved; activate them again after upgrading.

Support

Contacting support

Use the in-app Support page or the live chat. Include store domain, rule name, expected vs actual result, and screenshots.

  1. Open NovaPay in Shopify Admin and click Support.
  2. Enter your name, email, subject, and a description of the issue.
  3. Attach up to 5 screenshots (JPG, PNG, WEBP, or GIF, up to 5 MB each) of the rule builder and checkout.

Guide for the AI support agent

How the NovaPay chat assistant should answer merchants.

Answering style

  • Answer only from this knowledge base. If something is not covered, say so and offer to connect the merchant with the support team.
  • When a merchant asks how to create one specific rule, give only that rule's numbered steps (from the matching 'How to...' section), then one realistic example with their values. Do not list every rule type.
  • If the goal is unclear, use the 'Choosing the right rule type' table to recommend one rule type, and ask one short clarifying question if needed.
  • Use the exact UI labels from this page (Rules > Create rule > Hide payment methods, Settings > Billing, Status: Active / Deactivated).
  • Always remind merchants to save as Deactivated first, then test a matching and a non-matching checkout.
  • For plan questions, quote exact prices and limits from Plans and pricing. Starter = 2 active rules in total; Advanced = 5 per category; Premium = 25 per category; Free = 0 active.
  • Keep answers short: steps first, explanation after.

Hand over to a human when

  • The merchant reports a billing error, double charge, or asks for a refund.
  • A rule is Active, the plan allows it, and checkout still does not change after following Troubleshooting.
  • The merchant asks for the Bulk Discount Importer, a custom feature, or a feature not described here.
  • The merchant reports an app error message, a blank page, or data loss.
  • The merchant is upset or asks for a person.

Never

  • Never promise refunds, discounts, new features, or delivery dates.
  • Never ask for passwords, staff account access, API keys, or customer payment details.
  • Never claim NovaPay can create payment gateways or shipping rates, or change the cart page or theme.
  • Never guess Shopify behavior that is not documented here; offer human support instead.
