Shopify checkout payment rules for clearer payment options

Learn how to conditionally hide COD and other methods, rename payment labels, and reorder payment options with plan-aware publishing.

Core rule actions

Hide payment methods

Remove selected payment methods when the configured checkout conditions match.

  • Restrict COD for selected products or locations.
  • Hide gateways for specific cart values.
  • Keep a rule as a draft until it is ready.

Reorder payment methods

Move preferred methods higher in the checkout payment list without changing the gateway.

  • Prioritize prepaid or card methods.
  • Keep a consistent order for matched checkouts.
  • Reuse the same checkout condition types.

Rename payment methods

Replace payment labels with clearer customer-facing names.

  • Add concise payment instructions.
  • Use branded or localized wording.
  • Apply names only when conditions match.

Recommended workflow

From draft to active

  1. Choose a payment action and enter a clear internal rule name.
  2. Add checkout conditions that must match.
  3. Configure the payment methods affected by the rule.
  4. Test both matching and non-matching checkouts.
  5. Activate the rule when the result is correct.

Plan limits

Starter supports 2 active rules, Advanced supports 5, and Premium supports unlimited active rules. Additional rules can remain saved as drafts.

Design useful checkout conditions

Location and delivery context

Target countries, provinces, cities, address details, or postal codes when payment availability depends on fulfillment coverage.

  • Account for common city spelling variations.
  • Keep broad country rules separate from narrow area rules.
  • Test both supported and unsupported addresses.

Cart and order value

Use totals, products, collections, quantities, discounts, or other cart attributes to align methods with order economics.

  • Confirm the currency and threshold operator.
  • Test values immediately above and below a boundary.
  • Avoid overlapping rules with conflicting actions.

Customer context

Apply payment experiences for customer groups when Shopify provides the required customer information at checkout.

  • Use descriptive customer tags.
  • Test signed-in and guest checkout separately.
  • Document why the segment needs a different result.

Troubleshooting checklist

When a rule does not run

  1. Confirm the rule is Active and within the plan’s active-rule allowance.
  2. Check that the payment method label matches Shopify checkout exactly.
  3. Review whether All conditions requires another condition that is currently false.
  4. Verify text spelling, numerical operators, currency values, and customer context.
  5. Temporarily simplify the rule, test again, and add conditions back one at a time.

Keep an audit trail

Use clear rule names and internal notes. Record the matching cart, non-matching cart, and expected payment result whenever a rule is changed.
